Aubrey Independent School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Nicole Black as the new Aubrey High School head girls basketball coach beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.

Coming to Aubrey ISD from serving as the girls athletic coordinator and head girls basketball coach in Rio Vista ISD, Black is a multisport coach with a record of reviving teams and yielding competitive success.

Black has also held top girls basketball coaching positions in Groom and Bangs ISDs, where in Groom, she ended a 13-year playoff drought in her second season, making a Regional Quarterfinal appearance the following year.

Having began her education career in Saint Jo ISD, Black’s experiences also include coaching volleyball, cross country and track.

“Coach Black brings high energy and has a reputation of getting younger kids involved in the program,” Aubrey ISD Superintendent Dr. Shannon Saylor said. “Her basketball IQ, family history of basketball, college playing experience and getting a head coaching start at a young age has led to her being really embedded in the basketball world.”

Aubrey ISD Executive Director of Athletics Keith Ivy feels Black will deliver growth and success for Aubrey ISD students.

“We went through an extensive interview process and Coach Black stood out,” Ivy said. “She’s got a plan to start them young and get them interested in basketball and is a top tier coach capable of leading a basketball program in a successful way.”

The Aubrey High School girls basketball coaching position connects Black to a sport and the people she loves.

“I’m really excited to take over a program that’s got a tradition of being successful and to be closer to my family in the ‘big city’,” Black said.

With relatives in nearby Denton and Krum, Black is happy about the move to Aubrey ISD.

“It’s the opportunity to get to a bigger school and I’ll get to see my people a lot more often,” she said.

Getting girls on the trajectory to play at the high school level and beyond and directing their growth as young women is what Aubrey ISD is excited to see.

“The hope is that we have an increase in participation in our girls basketball program and that she’ll get kids playing year round.” Dr. Saylor said.

In addition to coaching, Black credits herself as a “solid classroom teacher,” with notable success as a high school educator with an overall 90% passing rate on the English I STAAR test. Beyond English Language Arts, Black also holds special education, physical education (PE), social studies and generalist certifications.

Black is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Administration at Lamar University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from New Mexico State University.
